Met Gala ’22

The guests who actually followed the dress code

The Met Gala 2022 was held on May 5th at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The Met Gala is a red carpet event and closed party, famous for the fashion worn by A-list celebrities. It holds a themed dress code every year; last year was “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion” (as you may have read from my previous Met Gala article) and this year’s theme followed it, “America: An Anthology of Fashion.”

The themes for the Met gala always sound intricate and complicated, and that’s maybe why some celebrities cannot comprehend the dress code. Anyone who follows the fashion industry gets ready to critique what’s worn and if it obeys the theme. This year’s theme “America: An Anthology of Fashion” (or Gilded Glamour, as some called it) expresses the idea of the history of fashion and the evolution of designer collections. Some can describe the theme as fashion from the 1870s to the 1900s consisting of tight corsets, puffy gowns, tiaras, diamonds, and anything that can remind you of Bridgerton.

As hard as it seems for celebrities to comprehend themes, some celebrities take their time and creativity to design an intricate gown or suite that follows the dress code. Here are some who did…

Billie Eilish

Billie Eilish is an artist in the music industry in her early 20s. She’s been known for being a relatable teenager and is open with views on body positivity and expression through clothing. Billie Eilish was formerly known to wear baggy and masculine clothing, but she has recently been seen with more feminine pieces like corsets. For her Met ’22 look, she followed the theme by wearing a tight corset and gown to emphasize her figure. She utilized lace and satin fabrics known to be worn during the Gilded Age. In addition to an array of pastel colors, she added flowers to her gown. Though it was very on theme, it wasn’t a fan favorite. It was critiqued by many (including myself) for the debatable accessories and mix of colors.

Bella Hadid

Bella Hadid is a supermodel known to work for many high-end brands, including Versace. In the 2022 Met Gala, Bella Hadid did a twist on Gilded Glamour. She focused on placing a spotlight on the taboo topics from the Gilded Age. Bella is said to have been inspired by prostitutes’ clothing from that age. She wore a tight black corset with lace tights, gloves, and a long black skirt with a slit. Her hair and accessories paired perfectly with the rest. Bella stood to make a statement and still was able to mostly follow the dress code.

Laura Harrier

Actress Laura Harrier wore one of the most loved gowns. She was perfectly on theme wearing a puffy gown with a corset top. The fabric was a take on lace and still had a pattern that screamed Gilded Glamour. Laura wore velvet gloves, slick back hair, and pearl-like accessories. Though the colors utilized in this look can be said to be out of the theme, it gives the necessary spice to the look.

There were other fan favorites like Kaia Gerber and Blake Lively’s gowns. Although they somewhat deviated from the theme, they made a great impression. This goes to show that there is an importance to themes since it can make an event a memorable occasion. My advice is that, if the organizers of an event took the time to come up with a theme, the least you can do is make sure to follow the dress code.
